TEAM CANADA FINISHES IN SECOND PLACE AT SPENGLER CUP

DAVOS, Switzerland – Canada’s National Men’s Team dropped a 3-2 decision to HC Davos in the final of the Spengler Cup on Sunday, December 31st.

Mario Scalzo (St. Hubert, QC/Iowa, AHL) and Jason Doig (Montreal, QC/Chelyabinsk, Russia) gave Canada a 2-0 lead in the first period. But HC Davod scored later in the first and two more times in the third period for the victory.

A sellout crowd of 7,080 fans took in the action. The Spengler Cup is the oldest continual club tournament in the world, as it dates back to 1923. The 2006 tournament marks the 80th time the Spengler Cup has been held.

Team Canada reached the final thanks to a 3-1 record in the five-team round-robin. Canada beat EHC Eisbaren Berlin 5-2, HC Davos 6-3 and Mora IK 4-3. Canada’s only round-robin loss came to Khimik Russia by a 5-0 score.
